Wedding Gloves - From Tradition To Elegance

Defined Tag:

There are many expectations from a bride, more so in a formal wedding celebration.  The bride has to look her best during this time, because of posterity more than anything else.  After all, we will only get married once in our lifetime (ideally speaking, at least) and we want everything to be perfect.

And so goes the tradition of lavish wedding preparations, which is most observed in preparing the bride's wedding ensemble.  From the bridal gown which shall be the focus of the motif of the celebration, to her shoes and her accessories, no stones will be left unturned during this period.

One of the most important components of the bride's ensemble are wedding gloves.  Wedding gloves hold a particular significance for the impending marriage.  It is said that a happy marriage requires work from both parties.  By wearing gloves, the bride's hands are kept clean to express the fact that she's reserving all her efforts and her love for her husband-to-be and for the marriage that should last a lifetime.

Wedding gloves have become a part of celebratory traditions the world over.  In Greece, for example, people believed that the bride should place a sugar cube inside her gloves to ensure sweetness and affection throughout the marriage.

During the Victorian era, gloves were said to add a level of formality to a wedding occasion.  The length of the gloves back then was dependent on the time of the day the wedding was celebrated.  Weddings celebrated during daytime necessitated short gloves, while wedding celebrated in the evening required longer gloves, often extending up to the elbows.

In medieval times, it was customary that guests would dance with the bride during the wedding celebration.  However, it was considered taboo for anyone else other than the groom to touch the skin of the bride during this time.  Hence, gloves also became a necessity during this period in history.

Today, wedding gloves come in a variety of designs.  There are still the shorter gloves as well as the longer ones.  Most, however, are custom-made to fit the motif of the wedding and the style of the bride's gown.  The gloves are often embedded with fanciful accessories and knitted with intricate laces to add a semblance of pageantry to this particular component of the bride's outfit.  There are also readymade gloves that can easily be purchased, either individually or as parts of a set of bridal clothes.
